Song of the Month
(Hopefully) something new for you to check out
"You Are the Best Thing" by Ray LaMontagne
There's just something feels good about the Motown sound, isn't there? Couple that with a funky horn section and you've got a great song in my book. In this version, Mr. LaMontagne supplies his trademark intense vocals for a soon-to-be significant-other-mixtape staple.

Featured Artist: James Taylor
A few tracks from one of my all-time faves
Flipping channels the other night, I happened upon the James Taylor MusiCares Person of the Year Award (2006) show on PBS. At age 60, it would be hard to call him "Sweet Baby James" anymore, but the man still can sing. Of course, his first Greatest Hits album is a classic (minus "Steamroller"), but few have given him songwriting props for much beyond that. I happen to think that the troubadour's 2002 release "October Road" was a nice mini-comeback. Check of my list of the Top 10 James Taylor Songs and let me know what you think!

The Gem
A lesser-known song that deserves more attention
"He's Got a Way with Women" by A.J. Croce
Yes, he's the son of legendary singer-songwriter Jim Croce ("Time in a Bottle", "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"), but he's never quite broken into the mainstream. This bluesy number from 1993 has me wondering why, because he's definitely got a way with piano and vocals.

Chill Out
A nice, relaxing song to check out
"Heal the Pain " by George Michael
Like Pee-Wee Herman, George Michael has certainly been through his share of troubles (and I don't condone any of it), but that doesn't erase the fact that they are both talented performers in their given arenas. While not the most popular song of his catalog, "Heal the Pain" has a great melody, crisp production, and GM's terrific vocal stylings that should soothe whatever ails you.

Folk Fascination
Good old fashioned music with acoustic instruments
"Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver
I know this song talks about West Virginia, but I think there are many times when "the radio reminds me of my home far away... and driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday." Seriously, who would be better than John Denver to take you back home?

Kiddie Corner
Quality music for kids and adults alike
"Rainbow Connection" by Sarah McLachlan
If your kids haven't seen The Muppet Movie, they should. I actually like the Dixie Chicks' version on Mary Had a Little Amp a little better than this one (unfortunately not available on iTunes), but I do like Sarah McLachlan's pure voice and dramatic stylings on this song. Wait... you know what? Kermit's version from the movie beats them both.
