Featured Music for June 2009

Song of the Month
(Hopefully) something new for you to check out

"I Love Pop Music" by Ben Lee

You may remember Mr. Lee from the 2005 single "Catch My Disease" off of his excellent Awake Is the New Sleep album.  On this new single he tells us that pop music is "philosophy that you can dance to" and backs it up with a politically charged, toe-tapped singalong song.

Featured Artist: Prince
A few tracks from one of my all-time faves

Okay, I admit that I'm not a die-hard Prince fan.  I haven't heard many of the deeper tracks from his albums and I'm not really into the raunchier stuff (though I will admit enjoying "Sexy MF" in my younger days).  I just like his terrific pop music, especially "Kiss" and "When Doves Cry."  Check out the rest of my Top 10 Prince Songs list and let me know what you think.

The Gem
A lesser-known song that deserves more attention

"Love on a Farmboy's Wages" by XTC

Economy got you down?  Well, for just a few shillings you can enjoy one of my favorite XTC tunes of all time, this acoustic gem about a simpler time and place.

Folk Fascination
Good old fashioned music with acoustic instruments

"Cotton Jenny" by Gordon Lightfoot

It seems an appropriate time of year to recognize a song from Gord's classic 1971 release "Summer Side of Life."  This song and the title track from that album are two of my favorites from this legendary singer/songwriter.

Aaah Cappella
Unaccompanied Treasures

"My Little Girl" by Go Fish

Go Fish first tried to make it as a legitimate a capella group (if there is such a thing) and then found their way into a successful niche in the children's music arena.  This touching song, about a Father's love for his child, is one of their first and most popular recordings.

Kiddie Corner
Quality music for kids and adults alike

"Return to Pooh Corner" by Kenny Loggins

It's hard to believe that I've gone this long without placing Pooh Corner in the kiddie corner.  Of course I've been busy with all the work that needs to be done: count all the bees in the hives, chase all the clouds from the sky, etc....  As a parent of children who like that Silly Old Bear it's hard not to like this sillly old song.
