Around the World

Before we get to the tricky subject of United States city songs, let’s take a trip abroad and investigate the Top 10 Foreign City Songs.  One of the shoo-ins for the list was a track from one of my first records ever – Pablo Cruise’s Worlds Away (I’m pretty sure my parents got it from the cut-out bin, but I always enjoyed it in a part-joking, part-serious way).  Billy Joel had a few nominations, including “Vienna” and “When In Rome” (the latter also being a Nickel Creek song that made the cut), but I decided to go with a southeast Asian city instead.    Rufus Wainwright merited consideration for “Barcelona” (since I saw him as the warm-up act for Barenaked Ladies years ago), but he couldn’t crack a top 10 list from artists such as Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Warren Zevon, They Might Be Giants, Lyle Lovett, Herb Alpert, and more.  Can you guess the songs?  Check out the list and let me know what you think.

Thanks to Eric B. for his help on this list!

  1. I appreciate the unexpected credit, but you may want to reconsider Oxford Town to maintain the credibility of your list. It was actually written about Oxford, Mississippi. I guess it depends on your definition of “foreign”.

  2. Ooh, that’s not good. Thanks for the heads up, Ferrari – I’ve changed the list. This is going to make my U.S. city songs list even harder, though….

  3. I just realized I should have included ABBA’s “Waterloo” as well!
