Living Just Enough for the City

Figuring out a Top 10 list for foreign cities wasn’t too tough, but nailing down a similar list for U.S. cities is a bit more challenging.  Giving New York its own list helped, but there were still a number of worthy entries that fell by the wayside, including early rock n’ roll classic “Kansas City”, Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, and Oscar-nominated songs from the Philadelphia Soundtrack by Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.  Miami songs from Will Smith and The Blues Brothers missed the cut, as did more novel ditties “Theme from WKRP in Cincinnati”, “Cleveland Rocks”, “Duke of Dubuque”, and “Viva Las Vegas.”  In the end, some of my favorite artists (Billy Joel, Indigo Girls, Randy Newman, Elton John, and Sheryl Crow) made the list, as did surprise entries from Marty Robbins and Arlo Guthrie.  Also of note are one of David Letterman’s favorite songs from Michelle Shocked, Dr. Cat’s suggestion from the album above, and Ferrari’s suggestion of a Dylan song that I originally thought referred to England (it turns out Bob was talking about Mississippi).  Can you guess the songs?  Check out my list of the Top 10 U.S. City Songs, see how you did, and let me know if you can think of any others.

  3. All good songs – thanks for reading, Hully!

I have a separate list for New York.

“Chicago” is actually called “My Kind of Town”.

I almost put in “I Left My Heart,” but it just missed the cut.
