With a Little Help from…

FriendsI stumbled across an article on the ever-reliable internet and saw that June 8 is “Best Friends Day.”  After doing a little research, I’m not sure if the date is correct, if it’s supposed to be about a dog (man’s best friend), or if it’s even a real day to anyone.  Regardless, I started thinking about Friend Songs and came up with a list.  Can you guess what’s on it?  Did I miss any good ones?

  1. I am surprised that “You’ve Got a Friend In Me” from Toy Story 2 is not here…yet. There’s also the Carole King original of You’ve Got a Friend, but that’s covered by JT. I’ll keep thinking.

  2. I quickly perused my iPod for songs beginning with the word “friends” and found the following:

    1. “Friends” by Elton John (already on the list)
    2. “Friends” by The Police (quite canibalistic, but good drumming that CA would like)
    3. “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks
    4. “Friends Like You, Who Needs Friends” by Mark Mothersbaugh (instrumental from the Rushmore soundtrack)

The only one of this group I could see you adding to the list is perhaps the Garth Brooks one. The other two are a bit on the odd side.

  3. Found a few more on the iPod…(yes, I am working today, but I can work and listen at the same time).

“You Were a Good Friend” by Kenny Rogers

“You’re a Friend of Mine” by Clarence Clemons & Jackson Browne

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by the St. Olaf Choir

“F: Four Furry Friends” by the Sesame Street Cast (the monsters)

  4. Great list. I wish I had an iPod so I could be cool and browse it like Matthew did. I need to listen to that song by The Police he referenced. By the way, if a song is canibalistic, what does that mean?

  5. “Friends in Low Places” was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar, so I’ll add it. The Toy Story song is on my Lyle Lovett list, but it’s worth duplicating. I also added an a cappella version of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” that I think you’ll like. Thanks for the suggestions!

  6. De nada. I’ve liked other songs by The Martins that you’ve shared, so I look forward to listening to this one.

Craig, you’ll understand why I described the song as canibalistic when you hear it.

I just heard a version of You’ve Got a Friend in Me by Steve Tyrell and Dr. John on the radio yesterday and I thought it was cool. Steve Tyrell has an album of Disney songs which also includes When She Loved Me from Toy Story 2. Sounds like an album worth checking out based on a few samples I heard on a web site.

  7. Here’s the iTunes link for that Steve Tyrell album that Matthew mentioned – it’s pretty good!
